What is the keto flu? It is one of the most common side effects on a low carb diet. It’s what most people experience during the first week, often on day 2-4. It is named the “keto flu”, due to it’s flu-like symptoms.
Headaches are a very common symptom during this transition into ketosis, as well as feeling tired, lazy, and unmotivated. Nausea is also a common symptom. It’s also possible to experience confusion or lack of focus during this period. Lastly, it’s common to feel irritable, getting frustrated easily with the people around you.
Luckily, these symptoms typically disappear on their own within a couple of days. These symptoms can even be often avoided altogether! The main cause is usually dehydration and/or salt deficiency, caused by a temporarily increased urine production.
How can I cure or avoid the keto flu?
Any problems can be minimized, and sometimes entirely cured, by getting enough water and salt into your system.
Try adding half a teaspoon of salt to a large glass of water and drink it. This may reduce or eliminate side effects within 15-30 minutes. If that’s the case, this may be repeated once daily as needed during the first week.
A better-tasting option is to use broth or bouillon (chicken, beef, or bone broth).
